Types of Pain

Pain is a complex experience within the human body that is comprised of interactions between physical, cognitive, emotional and environmental factors. Everyone feels pain from time to time and it can be absolutely debilitating. To better treat your pain and improve your quality of life, you must first identify the type of pain you have. There are two main classifications of pain:

Acute Pain– Defined by medical texts as pain lasting under 3-6 months. You can typically pin point the cause of this pain by an event or injury.

Chronic Pain– A pain which lasts 3-6 months or longer. It is characterized as a state of being or chronic condition. Chronic pain persists well beyond expected healing time and often serves no purpose within the body (e.g., migraines or back pain). Chronic pain is poorly understood by many.
